Why do people yarn bomb

If you have a strip you would like to put on a tree and you find a branch or stem the same size or smaller then your strip that would work too. How long does it stay up for? Six weeks is probably the optimal length of time a yarn bombing can be left in place. Depending on the location, time of the year and exposure to the elements yarn bombing can stay up, relatively clean and neat looking, for as many as two or three months. For the sake of their health yarn bombed trees should be uncovered after six to eight weeks at the most.

Do people have yarn bombing clubs? If so how would you recommend you start one? Search social media and you will find yarn bombing groups, large and small, public and private. If you would like to start one of your own you could ask your knit and crochet loving friends to join you, put together a group on Facebook or meet up.

Find a spot in your area that could do with some colourful decoration. Think up and plan the size and time frame of your project, what you will cover, how much of it, the colours and patterns you will use and when and how you will install it. Just a small gesture, but it got the ball no pun intended rolling, because people started to notice and give her positive feedback.

Soon after, she started a group called Knitta Please which is a community of like-minded knitters who like the idea of beautifying public spaces. But what made her do it in the first place? The reason why Magda yarn-bombed her door handle was simple — she just wanted to put something warm and cozy-looking on a cold urban material that she sees every day. People can understand putting a cozy on a teapot, but a doorknob? Why dress up your doorknob? Well, why not! She decided to go to the public space and wrap the stop sign near her house.

No big deal, right? Well, it caused a public reaction: people not only stopped by to look at it but also started to take pictures of this unique view that they saw. Was this a joke? Who would put yarn on a stop sign? Names include: Knotorious N. They stuck to hip hop conventions, even putting knitted sneakers over telephone lines the way that gangs did it to express their dominance of a given territory, although the prevailing message in this case was a message of niceness, as opposed to aggression.

This action gave way to another POV, a new perspective on yarn bombing, and changed her career further because she became known by her artwork to the other people. Another interesting thing happened after the bus: according to Magda, yarn bombing had stopped belonging to only her, and it became a fully functional art movement across the world. The more people saw wrapped up things in the public areas, the more started to repeat it by creating their own pieces in different places all around the world.

If you need to use several pieces to cover different parts, use a simple stitch to sew all of the pieces together to create the illusion of one cohesive piece. Click here to cancel reply. There are so many other things to do with your talents…knit clothing for homeless, make blankets for humans or rescue animals. But knit around a tree?? These are fantastic. We have council permission and now need the know how! Can you help? We are group of knitters and crocheters that donate our products.

What we do, we crochet granny squares, the knitters knit colorful squres, all at the same size, and once in a while, we go and put them together around a trunk: at an enterance of community center, at a school of disabled kids. So whenever we are between to major projects, we do squares. Good Luck to you. I would like to get more information to do for a project, I am a volunteer at Amaroo Village, Gosnells. This is a great way to spend your free time and appreciate the fact that someone thought to explain how to do it and what to consider.

Thanks for reading! This is vandalism and harmful to nature. There are living organisms on rocks and trees like insects and fungi and bacteria and molds that can be trapped by the stupid yarn. Not to mention the tree itself not needing something on it that could get wet and encourage bad, damaging mold.

Plus, its just tacky. We appreciate your patience during this process. If you have any other questions, please email or contact Customer Service at
